  • Art Director Raju Satpute suicide case takes a political turn

The Raju Satpute suicide case has taken an all-new political turn. Satpute, an Art Director from the film and TV industry, had recently committed suicide after releasing a video just moments before his unfortunate end. In the video Satpute had alleged that he was troubled by Rakesh Morya of Film Studio Setting and Allied Mazdoor Union, where the latter had caused Satpute to lose out on multiple film and TV projects. Now, a delegation of film and television personnel led by Ameya Khopkar of MNS Cine Wing have decided to meet MNS Chief Raj Thackeray on Tuesday morning. When ETimes contacted Ameya Khopkar he said, "We are going to discuss with Raj Thackeray that no union members, nor anyone from MNS, should be allowed to visit any set to demand membership or create any other undue pressure on the members of the fraternity." Khopkar has sent out his associates and party members to meet with the entire fraternity and he is confident that most technicians from all the departments of filmmaking will be attending the meeting with Thackeray. The same delegation will also be meeting the Joint Commissioner of Police, Vishwas Nagre Patil to seek police intervention if producers and technicians are troubled by the film union in the future. Rakesh Morya, on the other hand, had revealed that when he got to know about Satpute's video announcing his intent to commit suicide, the former with help of General Secretary of All India Camera Technicians had reached out to the police in a bid to save Satpute. But the unfortunate incident could not be avoided despite the Mumbai and Pune police's best efforts.

  • Jackie Shroff: The day Salman Khan calls me 'Mr Shroff', I will know that our equation has changed

Jaggu dada, as he is lovingly called by his fans and most people in the industry, is an actor who even after almost four decades in the industry enjoys immense popularity. From playing the quintessential Bollywood hero to making a smooth transition to strong supporting roles, his is a success story worth writing about. Jackie Shroff, aka ‘Bhidu’, was recently seen in the Bollywood potboiler ‘Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’. The film that saw a digital release in India on May 13, was screened in theatres in over 40 countries. In a chat with BT, he talks about social media, staying relevant, and of course, Salman Khan, among other things. Excerpts: You’ve been seen in films like with Salman Khan since the 90s, and you continue to share a good rapport with him. Your bond with him goes back to a time long before he stepped into Bollywood. Tell us something about those times. I have known him as a model and then as an assistant director, who handled my clothes and boots when I was shooting for ‘Falak’ (1988). He used to look up to me and is like my little brother. When he was an AD, I used to show his photographs to the producers I was working with. Finally, KC Bokadia’s brother-in-law gave him a break in Bollywood. It was ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (1989) that catapulted him to stardom, but I feel that I was instrumental in him getting a break in the industry. Toh aise dosti shuru hui… well, dosti itni nahi hai ki we are very close, but he keeps coming up with films, aur jab bhi kuchh bada aata hai toh he thinks of me first. This time around, he came up with an action-comedy like ‘Radhe...’, which is directed by Prabhudeva. Comedy is something I have stayed away from, maybe because the writers didn’t think I was comical enough. When I learnt that Prabhudeva wanted to cast me in his film, it took me back to the time when he had choreographed a song for me in ‘Gardish’ (1993). Prabhudeva was also my co-actor in ‘Agni Varsha’ (2002). So, he has worked with me as a dance director, co-actor and then, I saw his film, ‘Wanted’ (2008). So, I thought that if this guy has offered me a role, I should do it...because a man who can make me dance, can also make me do comedy.

I mean, he’s one of the finest actors we have in Bollywood today! I’ve watched a lot of his work and I love all of them, however, my top three picks are his roles in ‘Highway’, ‘Sarabhjit’, and the Hollywood movie ‘Extraction’. Be it his raw, authentic Haryanvi character in ‘Highway’, or his heart-wrenching performance in ‘Sarabhjit’, none of his roles can be discredited. I’m just truly grateful to have gotten this opportunity to work with him. He’s one actor who gives all his heart and soul to his characters, a trait that I totally resonate with. I just want to personally thank Randeep Hooda and my director Neerraj Pathak giving me this opportunity. “Behind the scenes is actually a lot more work than people believe it to be. Unlike my other roles, this role has been exceptionally challenging for me as it required me to undergo a complete physical and visual transformation. I can’t wait for the audience to see it, it’s something completely different. Also, my co-star, Randeep Hooda, has been very supportive and helpful throughout this journey so far. He’s always checking up on me, and we actually have great conversations about movies, acting, and a lot more behind the scenes. I’m nothing but grateful to him for being such a great co-star,” she added when quizzed about the vibe they had shared on set.

I’m usually really wired around a release. I look forward to the reactions of people. Every release has been different so far. Sometimes I’m working, but this time around, since I was at home, I’ve had more time to take in the reactions to the film. I thought the movie was set in a very cool and interesting space. It was like a throwback and homage to the films of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, but it was given a very contemporary treatment. I was fascinated by our director’s (Maqbool Khan) vision for it. This role of a cabbie was an exciting one to play at this stage of my career, because a lot of people see me as more of a younger actor, but this character allowed me to display a slightly more grown-up version of myself.”

Taapsee Pannu has been finalised as the leading lady and Vikrant Massey will be playing the male lead in the Bhushan Kumar and Aanand L Rai production. “The makers thought a fresh pair would work in the film’s favour as it will keep the mystery element intact, since there will be no pre-conceived notions about them as a couple,” reveals a source close to the development. • John Abraham: I believe Independence Day belongs to me

After films like 'Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran' and 'Batla House', one had expected to see more of the serious, intense John Abraham. So, the upcoming laugh riot, 'Pagalpanti', is a surprise. What’s the plan as an actor and producer? As an actor, I needed a break from intense roles. So, being a fan of Anees Bazmee’s brand of cinema, which I enjoy as a viewer, I accepted 'Pagalpanti' after hearing just one line of the story and laughing all through the narration. As a producer, I have three films lined up 'Gorkha', which will be directed Nikkhil Advani, 'Ray' helmed by Abhishek Sharma who’s made 'Parmanu' and Rensil D’Silva’s next. Hopefully, they will raise the bar set by 'Vicky Donor', 'Madras Cafe', 'Parmanu' and 'Batla House', which gained acceptance from both, the media and the audience. 'Ray', for instance, is a genre you have never seen on the Indian screen. A love story, and yet drastically different. As a producer, I want to go into areas no one has explored. (Smiles) I believe higher the risk, the greater the profit.

  • Student of the Year 2 actress Tara Sutaria: Sidharth Malhotra and I are friends...good friends

There is a definite hangover of the original in Student of the Year 2. The audience’s tastes have evolved in seven years… I admit there are many similarities, but the differences are also huge. For example, the focus is on a not-often-seenbefore sport like kabaddi. Even the music, dances and Tiger’s (Shroff) action is unique. Despite evolving tastes, there are some films we want to watch and 'SOTY 2' is one of them.I’ve trained in music and dance all my life, so I wanted to be a part of the arts but wasn’t consciously thinking of Bollywood. Theatre was my home, I was raised performing on stage, there’s nothing more beautiful than that. Grease, which you mentioned, was my favourite stage production, and to play Sandy Olsson was a dream. I wish someone would adapt it on screen, I’d jump at the opportunity to feature in it again. To answer your question, I wanted to be a singer. But when I was 20, I met Karan who asked me if I was interested in acting, they were scripting SOTY 2. I instantly agreed as I’m a huge fan of the original and after graduating in Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) from St. Andrew’s College, I auditioned for the role. It’s been a whirlwind since.
