She had done a couple of films in Tamil with popular heroes in the 90s, but then, she got busy in Kannada cinema. When we approached her for the same role, she was happy to be back in Tamil cinema after a long gap. Casting Suman works in our favour as she was well-known in the 90s and the role demands a familiar face.”

It was during the shoot of I that we took a selfie together. He doesn’t like his fans calling him ‘sir’, and considers us as one of his family members. I had invited him to come for my marriage, but he couldn’t make it. But I was so happy that he named my daughter three-and-a-half years ago.     Even as pre-production work for director Vijay’s Thalaivi, a biopic of Jayalalithaa, is on in full swing, there was no official confirmation on the cast. While Kangana Ranaut was prepping to play former actress and CM Jayalalithaa, there was no word on who will be playing Makkal Thilagam MGR, who had a huge influence on her life. He not only co-starred with Jayalalithaa, but also mentored her in her political journey. And now, we have it from sources close to the film that Arvind Swami has been roped in to play the Puratchi Thalaivar.

    A couple of days ago, the teaser of Peranthal Parasakthi, a film that stars Sarath Kumar, Radikaa and Varalaxmi in the lead, got social media buzzing. What’s interesting is that the team is yet to go on floors with the film, and the teaser was kind of a look test to gauge the feel of the movie. The excitement is evident in Varalaxmi’s voice when she tells us, “We only shot this short trailer to get the feel of the film and understand how we will look in the movie. This might not even be the final look. I play a photographer in the film, which is based on real-life incidents involving ram fighting, a popular rural sport.”

  • Arun Vijay injured on the sets on AV30

    Arun Vijay has got injured on the sets of his upcoming film, tentatively titled AV30. He shared the news on his micro-blogging page and said that he had sustained injury on the sets while canning an important action scene and that he is now back in action. He posted, “I have never felt pain when I'm hurt at work, for this is the journey I love and chose to rise and stay in.. every scar tells a story. Shooting for #AV30 ????.. back with my dearest @silvastunt ???? #FightNights.” (sic) Arun Vijay will be seen as a cop in the film, which is directed by GNR Kumaravelan. The actor has in his kitty Karthick Naren’s action thriller, Mafia with Priya Bhavani Shankar and Prasanna, Naveen’s (Moodar Koodam director) Agni Siragugal and Boxer with Ritika Singh. He was last seen in the action venture, Prabhas and Shraddha Kapoor’s Sahoo, which released in many languages.

  • Kollywood stars say no to banner culture

    Life-sized cut-outs are anything but new to Tamil cinema, which often goes hand-in-hand with ubiquitous banners of Kollywood’s dearest. But the winds of change may be finally blowing in. Following the death of 23-year-old techie Subhasri, Kollywood stars have decided to say no to banner culture. Subhasri was riding her two-wheeler on the Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road in the city last week, when a banner (erected by an AIADMK functionary for his son’s wedding) fell on her, causing her to lose balance. Seconds later, the techie was run over by a water tanker, which crushed her to death. The incident sparked immense anger among the residents of Tamil Nadu, with its effect spilling onto Kollywood as well.“It is our responsibility to make sure that we do not let these incidents happen again,” veteran actor Kamal Haasan declared in a monologue in the latest Bigg Boss Tamil episode.

  • Amitash in Atharvaa’s remake of Ninnu Kori

    Director Kannan has kick started the second schedule of his film, a remake of the Telugu hit Ninnu Kori, with Atharvaa in Chennai. And Velaiilla Pattadhari baddie Amitash Pradhan has joined the team as one of the leads in the film. Anupama Parameswaran plays the female lead. Kannan says, “Amitash will be playing Aadhi’s role from the Telugu film. He comes from a theatre background and is a good performer. He also fit the character well — an IT guy working abroad, someone who’s genial. We will be shooting till next week in Chennai, and go for a break. We will then head abroad to film a few important sequences, and with that, it will be a wrap.”

  • Is Karthi a lucky charm for directors?

    One of the actors to have delivered strong performances in his films, Karthi is awaiting the release of Kaithi, which is being directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. While he has wrapped up Jeethu Joseph’s film with Jyotika in the lead, the actor also has another film, tentatively titled Sultan, with Bakkiyaraj Kannan, co-starring Rashmika Mandanna. Even as the actor’s busy with his commitments, an industry insider points out an interesting aspect that relates to his directors – relative newcomers who work with Karthi end up committing projects with top league actors soon. The source says, “It started with Susienthiran – for his second film, he worked with Karthi in Naan Mahaan Alla and soon after, he signed Rajapattai with Vikram, which released the next year. Siva made his directorial debut in Kollywood with Siruthai went on to do four films with Ajith next. Pa Ranjith’s second film was Karthi’s Madras, and his next two projects were with Rajinikanth – Kabali and Kaala. After Sathuranga Vettai, Vinoth did Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru with Karthi, and his next two films are with Ajith – Nerkonda Paarvai, and another film that will start soon. And now, Lokesh Kanakaraj, who’s directing Karthi in Kaithi, which happens to be his second film, has signed Vijay for his third film! We wonder who Bakkyaraj, who debuted with Remo, is going to work with!”

  • Kutty Radhika’s back in Kollywood with a period horror film

    After a hiatus of over a decade, Kutty Radhika is back in Kollywood. The actress, who’s best remembered for her performance in Eiyarkai here, is playing the lead in Damayanthi, a horror thriller, which is being made in five languages. Directed by Navarasan, the film has Radhika playing the titular role. “It is a horror thriller, which will be on the lines of Arundhati and Bhaagamathie. I first narrated the script to Anushka Shetty. She really liked the story, but was busy with other commitments. My next choice was Radhika. However, she, too, was busy with a couple of Kannada films. I’d asked her if she could hear the narration. Eventually, she heard the script and loved it. She altered her dates and made time for this project,” says Navarasan.

  • Vijay fit to be in politics: Seeman

    Actor and politician Seeman recently stated at a media interaction that Thalapathy Vijay is cut out for politics. He added that when people with no qualifications become politicians, who can’t Vijay who is a big star. Seeman also said that he had asked Vijay to enter politics and that he would support him whenever that happens. He said that after Rajinikanth, its Vijay in Tamil cinema.   • Sandakari set washed away in Kerala rain

    The team of Sandakari has just wrapped up shoot of the film, but director Madhesh says it was not without their share of adventure. The cast and crew, including Vemal and Shriya Saran, was filming in Kochi till a day before heavy rainfalls hit the area and the set they had erected for the shoot got flooded. “It was a bad situation in Kerala, but I think we got lucky,” the filmmaker begins, “We were shooting for a major portion in an island-kind of place about 20km away from Kochi. We had erected a set of a house on the banks of a water body; it took us over a month to do the set work. We shot for about 15 days from July end, and had planned to return for patch work if need arises. But hardly a day after we packed up that schedule, heavy rains hit Kerala and a flood-like situation emerged. We were on our way to Pollachi via Palakkad. When I reached out to the coordinators in Kochi, they told us that water had entered the set and it almost got washed away in the flood. It was nothing short of a miracle that we managed to leave the place as planned.”

  • Kaithi to hit screens on September 27th?

    The buzz in the industry is that Karthi’s upcoming film Kaithi is likely to hit screens on September 27th. The shoot for the film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj is over. Majority of the portions were canned in Chennai and Tirunelveli. Karthi plays a prisoner in the film and just like Maanagaram, this is also expected to be a serious film. A poster of Kaithi was released which has Karthi screaming in pain and anger. Now the release of the film has got delayed allegedly due to CG works. The final footage is ready and the composition for the background score is on in full swing. The star cast includes Karthi,Narain, George Mayan, Ramana, Thalaivasal Vijay, Ponvannan and Yogi Babu.   • Vada Chennai actor joins Yash's 'KGF Chapter 2'!

    The shooting for KGF: Chapter 2', the sequel to the blockbuster hit KGF: Chapter 1 began in March this year and has been progressing at a brisk pace. The movie directed by Prashanth Neel stars Yash and Srinidhy Shetty and recently it was revealed that Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt will be playing the main villain Adheera in the second part. The latest addition to the cast of the film is actor Saran Sakthi, known for playing Aishwarya Rajesh's brother in 'Vada Chennai'. Saran Sakthi also starring in movies like Kadal, Rummy and Saga was well appreciated for his role in Vetrimaaran directer 'Vada Chennai' that Dhanush playing the lead role. Saran Sakthi took to his social networking page to share the news about him being a part of 'KGF Chapter 2' and posted, "Salaaam to all the rocky bhai fans out there.so so happy to be working in #kgfchapter2 with this super amazing team and especially the super cool friendly director @prashanth_neel sir.   • ‘Maanaadu not dropped; STR will be replaced with another actor for the role’

    In June 2018, producer Suresh Kamatchi had announced that he would be making a film with STR, which would be directed by Venkat Prabhu. A few days later, the team released a poster, in July 2018, revealing the title of the film as Maanaadu. At that time, the film, a political action drama, was supposed to release for Summer 2019. But the film failed to take off in the following months leading to speculation that it could get dropped. The team, however, sought to play down such rumours, by announcing in December 2018 that the film would start rolling from February 3, 2019. However, that did not happen. Later, it was told that STR was undergoing training in martial arts as prep work for the film. The team also announced in March 2019 that Kalyani Priyadarshan would be playing the female lead, and in June 2019, they said that Yuvan Shankar Raja would be composing the music.

  • Kabir Singh plays a dreaded terrorist in Sundar C’s movie

    Kabir Duhan Singh, who was seen in Kanchana 3 earlier this year, is excited about landing an interesting role in Sundar C’s film. The actor will be seen essaying the role of a most-wanted terrorist in the yet-to-be-titled project, which has Vishal playing the lead. Kabir, who joined the crew in Jaipur to shoot for his last schedule for the movie, says, “The film has a good story and I have a meaty role to play. I’m happy to have associated with Sundar C and Vishal, two big names in Kollywood. I have a good rapport with Vishal and Sundar C is an easy-going filmmaker. Hence, it’s a stress-free experience. I play a hardcore criminal who hails from another country and the world is after him. To prep for the role, I watched a few films and interviews of some terrorists to observe their body language. We shot in places like Mandawa and Kishan Ghat in Rajasthan apart from Azerbaijan and Turkey.”

  • Vikram to sport multiple looks in his next

    We had reported that Vikram’s next will be directed by Imaikaa Nodigal fame Ajay Gnanamuthu. Priya Bhavani Shankar will be paired opposite the actor and AR Rahman will compose for the project. A source says that the actor will be seen in 25 appearances in the movie. Kamal Haasan-starrer Dasavatharam and Sivaji Ganesan-starrer Navarathiri were the Tamil films which had its protagonist essaying ten and nine roles respectively. It is also heard that a US-based company will be in charge of the actor’s appearances. Vikram had earlier sported multiple appearances in films like Anniyan, Kandasamy, Irumugan, etc. Interestingly, the first look poster of the project which was released a while ago, has several appearances of his, arranged like a collage in a black and white background. Many ardent fans of the actor and other film buffs tried decoding the content of the film and his characters since the release of the first look on social media. Among Indian actors, it is Priyanka Chopra who holds the record for essaying most number of roles in a film, What is Your Rashee, which released a decade ago.

    It is now official that Dhanush’s film with Durai Senthilkumar is titled Pattas. In the movie, Dhanush will be seen in a dual role that of a father and son, with Sneha and Mehreen Pirzada paired opposite to the two characters. Durai Senthilkumar says, “This film will revolve around a martial art form that was present even before Kalari... something that the Cholargal practised. It will be a commercial as well as an emotional film. Dhanush took some training for the role before we started the project. He spent around 15-20 days on training, and Sneha too attended it. Currently, the shoot is progressing in Chennai. We have around 35 days of shooting left.” The director adds that though everyone sort of guessed the title, it is actually Pattas. “It is the name of younger Dhanush in the film. The first look and his name reveal the kind of person he is. It reflects the attitude of today’s youth,” he says.

  • Kazhugu 2 to hit the screens on August 1

    Krishna, Bindu Madhavi-starrer Kazhugu 2 is all set to release on August 1. The first part was released in 2012, a thriller love story that also saw Karunas and Thambi Ramiah in pivotal roles. Both the versions are directed by Sathya Siva and has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Though this is a sequel, this film will not be a continuation from part one. The second part will have a different story. Going by the teaser, the film revolves around two hunters played by Venkat and Krishna who come to the forest to eradicate the problem of (Sennaai) wild dogs. After the film was awarded a ‘U’ certificate, the makers launched two singles 'Sakalakala Valli' a peppy folk dance number and 'Adi Yendi Pulla'. Kazhugu 2 will feature Yaashika Aanand in a special number ( Sakalakala Valli); Kaali Venkat and Manohar will be seen in pivotal roles.

  • Priya Bhavani Shankar pairs up with Vikram in Ajay’s film

    Priya Bhavani Shankar, who will be playing a major role in Shankar’s Indian 2, has bagged another biggie — Vikram’s film with director Ajay Gnanamuthu of Imaikkaa Nodigal fame, which will have music by AR Rahman. A source tells us, “Yes, Priya has signed on the dotted line. She will be playing Vikram’s pair in the film.” The actress, who will start shooting with Kamal Haasan for Indian 2 in August, is expected to join this film’s shoot by late September or early October. Referred to as #Vikram58, the film, an action thriller, will be made in three languages — Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Now, he is reportedly teaming up with Karthik Subbaraj. According to reports, Aishwarya Lekshmi is the latest one to join the star cast of the film. Sashikanth will be producing this venture under the banner Y NOT Studios and the film is set to go on floors in August 2019 at London. Reportedly, Thirunavukarasu 'Petta' fame will be handling the cinematography. Dhanush is currently busy filming Vetrimaaran's ‘Asuran’, produced by Thanu under the banner of V Creations. The film marks his fourth collaboration with director Vetrimaaran.     On July 12, Vijay Chandar shared a picture of himself with Bollywood star Aamir Khan on Twitter and had written, "Some time unexpected dreams come true love u Amir Sir (sic)." This sent netizens on a tizzy, with many even asking the filmmaker if he's part of Sanga Tamizhan, a film that he's directing with Vijay Sethupathi in the lead. Curious, we tapped Vijay, who was in the thick of a schedule in Karaikudi, and he told us, "I'm a big fan of Aamir sir, and when I learnt that he'd come to Karaikudi for some work, I used that opportunity to reach out to him. It was a memorable moment for me, meeting him and talking to him, even if it was just for a few minutes.” Meanwhile, Vijay, who last directed Sketch, is busy with the last few schedule of Sanga Tamizhan. The film has Vijay Sethupathi playing a double role for the first time ever in his career. The director had earlier told us, “I’ve met Vijay Sethupathi a few times and when I narrated the one-liner to him, he was kicked. He has done a variety of role, and he told me that he wanted to do a mass film. Avar oru mass mood la iruntharu. Even I like doing mass commercial films, and we thought this script could work for both of us.”

  • Director Vijay to begin shooting for 'Thalaivi' in October

    Actress Kangana Ranaut, who was last seen on screen in 'Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi', will be playing late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in the upcoming multilingual biopic 'Thalaivi'. Director AL Vijay is all set to get married with doctor Aishwarya this month. Following his marriage, the director is all set to start his next big movie Thalaivi. The film, announced on the occasion of 71st birthday anniversary of Jayalalithaa in February, will be directed by Vijay. To be produced by Vishnu Induri, the shooting of 'Thalaivi' is all set to begin in October first week. Reports are that the team will start with the shooting of sequences featuring young Jayalalitha, and will be shot in Mysore. The film has music by GV Prakash Kumar while Nirav Shah will crank the camera. 'Bahubali' and 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' writer has been brought on board to supervise the writing process. Interestingly, another Jayalalithaa biopic titled 'The Iron Lady' is currently in the offing. This project is gearing up for a 2020 release. Nithya Menen plays Jayalalithaa in "The Iron Lady", being directed by A. Priyadarshini. The film will be released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

  • Digangana Suryavanshi replaces Rhea Chakraborty in Dhanusu Raasi Neyargalae

    In April, we’d reported that Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty would be making her Kollywood debut with Sanjay Bharathi’s Dhanusu Raasi Neyargalae, which stars Harish Kalyan in the lead. Now, we’ve learnt that the actress will not be a part of the project owing to date clashes, and has been replaced by yet another Bollywood actress, Digangana Suryavanshi. Interestingly, this film will mark her debut in the Tamil industry. Sanjay confirms, “We started shooting with Harish and the rest of the cast a few months ago, and both Rhea and Reba Monica John were supposed to join the team sometime in June. But we weren’t able to work out continuous dates with Rhea because she was also busy with her Bollywood films. Harish, too, had other commitments. So, we spoke to Rhea and her team and mutually decided to part ways.”

    Dhanush and Selvaraghavan are coming together again after a gap of eight years for a film that will be bankrolled by producer S Thanu. The film will be the last of the three films that Dhanush will be making for Thanu, with whom he had entered into a three-film deal last year. He is currently shooting for Vetri Maaran’s Asuran and will begin the second film, directed by Mari Selvaraj, soon. Selvaraghavan’s film is likely to go on floors only by next year as Dhanush has already committed to a few more projects, with Karthik Subbaraj, Ramkumar (of Ratsasan fame) and Durai Senthilkumar’s untitled film, which he is simultaneously shooting for alongside Asuran. While there is speculation that this film might be a sequel to their cult Pudhupettai, we hear that this is going to be based on a fresh script that Selvaraghavan is currently working on.

  • Baahubali makers give OK for Sindhubaadh release

    The Vijay Sethupathi-starrer Sindhubaadh, which was slated to hit last Friday, had to postpone its release at the last moment due to a legal dispute involving its producer SN Rajarajan and Arka Mediaworks, the production house behind the Baahubali movies. Arka Mediaworks had obtained a stay on the release of the film in the Hyderabad High Court over money that Rajarajan of K Productions owed to them for distributing Baahubali: The Conclusion in Tamil Nadu. Now, after mediation, the production house has decided to give an okay to the release of the film as a goodwill gesture. Jagapathi Babu on the other hand plays the photographer who helps Baby regain her youth. The movie will be released on the occasion of Diwali this year. Meanwhile, the fans are eagerly awaiting the release of the title and first look of 'Thalapathy 63' on Vijay’s birthday on June 22. Recent reports are that Vijay will be playing a dual role in the movie and he is apparently playing the characters of a father and his son. It is already known that Vijay will be playing a football coach in the film. The portions involving the father character of Vijay are reportedly being shot in Chennai currently.

Though the film received mixed reviews at the Box Office, today, Pudhupettai is considered as one of the best films made in Tamil cinema. Thank you all for celebrating this film and kokki kumar even after 13 years. Overwhelmed.” In the meantime, Dhanush is busy working on Asuran along with Manju Warrier. The film is directed by Vetri Maaran.

    It had been earlier reported that AR Murugadoss started filming for his Rajinikath-starrer copdrama 'Darbar', in which Prateik Babbar plays the antagonist’s son, in mid-April. Now, we have learnt that the film also features Dalip Tahil as a senior officer to the South superstar’s cop. “My character supports Rajini bhai’s drive to clean the city of goons. I started filming with him at a hotel in Goregaon,” informed Dalip, who has worked with Rajinikanth in the 1995 actioncrime film 'Aatank Hi Aatank'. They had done another film together which didn’t release. “I was so happy to meet him after 24 years. I didn’t recognise him when he arrived on the first day as Rajini bhai is looking like a 25-year-old boy. He has maintained himself well. When I told him that, he had a good laugh,” the actor said, adding that his portions will wrap up with the Mumbai schedule. The Hindi-Tamil-Telugu trilingual also features Nayanthara.
